Adolescent Treatment
Full Spectrum Recovery is an outpatient therapy setting specializing in adolescent problems including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, substance abuse and other acting-out behaviors. We utilize research-based treatment plans and teach teens to think their way through their problems. Here at FSR, teens work privately with a licensed psychotherapist in a confidential atmosphere. Other healthcare practitioners, including the family’s M.D., are often consulted with the permission of the parents and the adolescent.
Our therapeutic approach is based on motivational enhancement rather than confrontation. We believe that it is the responsibility of the therapist to instill motivation in the teen. Without motivation, the best that can be hoped for is compliance and simple compliance is not the answer. Teens must take an active interest in their life and future.
Teens often suffer from a variety of problems at school and in the home that are related to depression and anxiety, or another underlying psychological condition. Each teen is assessed for self-destructive behaviors that can include substance abuse, eating disorders, violence, cutting, oppositional defiance and self-esteem issues. These behaviors are addressed through therapy, education, family contracts, and other community support. FSR is the top facility on the central coast for effective interventions in working with difficult cases.
We work closely with probation, schools, and other healthcare practitioners to create an atmosphere of safety for the teen. Our team approach with other professionals and the family encourages health in all aspects of the teenagers' life. FSR encourages the family to be involved in the therapeutic process, as we believe the system needs to be altered in order for the teen to achieve optimal success. We are able to provide drug testing and accountability for a teen's behavior and work accordingly in moving our teen clients in the direction of total abstinence. FSR therapists take pride in our extensive network of referrals and professional resources.
Regarding substance abuse, we believe that abstinence from substances is the most desirable goal. FSR does not support underage drinking or the use of illegal substances. However, in order to avoid falling into predictable therapeutic “traps” with teens, we encourage an open discussion regarding substance use. Through education and support we seek to motivate teens to choose abstinence. A personally chosen goal leads to the highest chance of success for an adolescent client.
Current research is telling us that an adolescent client's personal relationship with his or her therapist will lead to greater change and optimal health. Although most treatment processes for teens include a group, Full Spectrum Recovery believes that a personalized treatment plan and individual therapy leads to greater insight and longer term behavioral change. FSR clinicians have a vast experience in providing excellent care for this troubled population.
